Ambassador Crew

With our homeport in Traverse City, Michigan, we need a little help spreading the Unsalted Sailing love…so we’ve enlisted a handful of Unsalted Sailors throughout the Great Lakes.

It’s their job to share with all of us a little ‘Unsalted Reality’ of the Great Lakes sailing lifestyle in their neck of the woods – favorite anchorages, waterfront bars, boat drinks, recipes, horror stories, where to grab a bite, watch the sun set, that one time you know who did you know what…again.

Lake Michigan (west shore) – Scott Herman

I started sailing on Lake Erie back in college. Since then I have lived the Salted and Unsalted life.  Sailing and racing during stints in Charleston, SC and Clearwater, FL enabled me to add some sodium to my life.  After relocating to the North Shore of Chicago, I am back to the UNSalted side of things, sailing and racing our a Merit 25, “Daisy Mae”.  Having sailed anything, from a sunfish to a 60ft wooden schooner, my only rule is there must be room for a cooler of adult beverages!

This summer we are planning a charter trip with Bay Breeze in Traverse City, weekly beer can races, a cross lake journey, and the Leukemia Cup race in Chicago.

Lake Superior – Capt Paul

Howdy eh!
Let me first say that it’s going to be good fun participating in the Ambassador Crew Program. I sail mostly on Lake Superior aboard my Catalina 27 Percheye and have spent an inordinate amount of time aboard a great and dearly missed friend’s Nonsuch 30 Peregrine. Home base is the Keweenaw Peninsula.  The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Isle Royale National Park , The Canadian shore and of course the Keweenaw area are all frequent haunts which I have a decent bit of local knowledge of. Not just the navigational type of knowledge either, no way, there is so much more to sail cruising. I’ve been told ” The journey is half the fun” well what about the other half?   If you’re looking for a decent (edible) meal, stiff drink, good lookin’ bartender, even a hot shower or ride to re-stock the cooler I can often help. Oh yea, I know of a few anchorages too! Sharing my adventures and encouraging others to make their own sounds like another great way to pass the time while waiting on my anchor to drag or watching a gullible friend scrub my nonskid.  I hope I can offer something for all of you to enjoy and if I don’t well I don’t want to hear about it.

So raise a can…glass…err whatever to another Great Lakes sailing season!
